In the past two weeks, grand juries have chosen not to indict Darren Wilson, the officer who killed Mike Brown, or Daniel Pantaleo, the officer who killed Eric Garner. One person involved with these cases was indicted though: Ramsey Orta, the man who shot the video of Eric Garner’s altercation with police.

President Obama has recently come out in favor of police body cameras, and it has often been said that having video evidence in these situations would help bring clarity and even stop this from happening in the future.

And yet, we do have video footage of this incident, and the only person being punished is the man who filmed the murder on his cell phone.

Ramsey Orta was arrested and charged with a weapons violation in August of this year -- less than one month after the video of Eric Garner’s death went viral, causing outrage around the country.

Throughout the process, Orta has maintained his innocence, and he and his family have contended that the charges brought against him were trumped up in retribution for his involvement in the Eric Garner case.

Whether police body cameras really will curb police brutality or not, if people who film a cop clearly in the wrong fear that charges will be brought against them if they do, won’t that discourage people from filming something to try to add transparency to a trial?

Good police officers are necessary and appreciated in our community, but we cannot allow the bad cops to use their power to intimidate, harass or brutalize the public.

If you support the idea of police body cameras but in the meantime would be brave enough to film wrongdoing that you see, please sign this petition. Orta shouldn't be punished for trying to do the right thing by filming this horrible incident and bringing it to our attention.
