PLEASE SUPPORT PS/IS 78Q Elementary and Middle School Programs
The much needed increase of Kindergarten and elementary school classes in Long Island City’s growing community CANNOT BE ACHIEVED at the expense of the existing PS/IS 78Q’s middle school grades.
We are deeply saddened and shocked to have recently learned that the Department of Education is considering the removal / repurposing/ or phasing out of PS/IS 78 Q’s 6th through 8th grade sections in order to make way for additional classrooms for the lower grades.
As NYC’s taxpayers, parents of children currently attending PS/ IS 78 Q, and parents of pre-school children WE DEMAND AN INCLUSIVE and COMPREHENSIVE solution to Long Island City’s long standing lack of school space. The very much needed increase of Kindergarten and elementary school classes CANNOT IMPACT the existing PS/IS 78 Q students! Phasing out the 6-8 grades in favor of more kindergarten is not an acceptable solution.
We are very concerned about this issue given that we and the whole PS/IS 78Q school have worked hard for and have very much welcomed the school expansion to include grades 6, 7 and 8 two years ago. With this expansion hundreds of families committed to stay in Long Island City.
The build out of PS/IS 78Q middle school required the creation of laboratories adequate to support a modern middle school program as well as the training of teachers. That can’t be jeopardized.
As you are aware, the PS/IS78Q plays an essential role in ensuring a strong community by providing accessibility to all our residents.
We appreciate your immediate attention and response to this issue, with a fair and concrete proposal that ensures the growth and well being of our community.
Long Island City community will provide full support for any options that aim to maintain a full k to 8th grade program at PS/IS 78Q and focus on making the school even a better school.
