Why this petition matters

Started by Mark Treyger

We the undersigned join Council Members Mark Treyger and Chaim Deutsch in calling on the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission to recognize the iconic history of the Riegelmann Boardwalk and the important role it has played in the lives of millions of New Yorkers and tourists since its opening in 1923. The Riegelmann Boardwalk has stood as a jewel of Southern Brooklyn and New York City for nearly a century, drawing millions of visitors during that time.

The need for a Scenic Landmark designation is more important than ever, as any alteration to the style and composition of the boardwalk would irreparably damage its character and diminish its historical value. Presently, Prospect Park, Eastern Parkway and Ocean Parkway are the only three Scenic Landmarks in Brooklyn. While we do not question their significance, we do argue that the Riegelmann Boardwalk is equally iconic and historically significant and merits the protections that landmark status affords.
