NYC Free Water

NYC Free Water

The Issue

Water is a human right. Our mission is to make free tap water available at any storefront establishment that serves food. We need your help to show the city council the importance of this issue, so that a law can be passed to guarantee this right to New Yorkers!

New York tap water is some of the best in the country, and can be easily provided to patrons at little cost to businesses. While nobody should be charged for tap water, this issue has the greatest impact on low-income and homeless New Yorkers.

Over the last 10 years, the number of single homeless adults in NYC has grown by ninety-two percent, meaning that far more people are likely to not have access to their own sink from which to drink clean water. Moreover, inflation is causing an increase in the price of bottled water, making it difficult for low-income individuals to access water while they are out of their homes.

Many other benefits can come from free water! For example, bottled water is far worse for the environment than tap water in paper cups. Knowing that an establishment will give water for free may increase traffic to small businesses. Access to free water could even decrease the amount of New Yorkers buying unhealthy soft drinks, when a free alternative is available.

New York wouldn't be the first place to guarantee free water: for example, Spain passed a similar law earlier this year. With your help, we can set an example for other cities around the country!

With the help of city council sponsors, backed by public support, every New Yorker can have all-day access to something that we all need to survive: water.
