Extend the Ferry Service to City Island!

Extend the Ferry Service to City Island!
Why this petition matters

City Island is a quaint and scenic waterfront community in the Northeast Bronx. Despite the community's many assets, transportation to and from the island is an ongoing challenge, Public transportation options are limited to the BX 29 bus, and for drivers, there is only one road to get on and off the island. Because it is a local tourism hub, weekend traffic overwhelms the local roads into the community.
A ferry would be a great asset to City Island for many reasons. Firstly, it would give island residents a direct transportation option for travel to Manhattan, with the ability to transfer to ferry lines to Queens and Brooklyn. This would reduce commute times and facilitate recreational travel to other parts of New York City.
The ferry would benefit non-City Islanders as well because it would make City Island more accessible from all areas of the city. Despite its allure as a quaint seaside neighborhood, many New Yorkers never make it to City Island because it is simply too difficult and time-consuming to get to.
Making City Island more accessible would in turn be greatly beneficial to the economy of the island. Despite being a draw to restaurant-goers, the island has many empty storefronts and small businesses have difficulty staying afloat with only the local community to serve. Expanding where visitors can come from would revitalize local commerce and increase the types of businesses that can thrive on the island.
Traffic and parking on the island are ongoing concerns. By providing an alternative method for accessing the island, a ferry would potentially reduce the number of drivers to the island, while also increasing foot traffic for our local businesses.
As part of a comprehensive ferry route along the east coast of the Bronx (one that we hope will extend to Westchester in the future), a ferry stop on City Island would provide an alternative option for accessing the island from other parts of New York City, as well as provide local residents with a much-needed transportation alternative.
