Concerned Parents in NYC started this petition to Chancellor Meisha Porter and

Concerned parents want to STOP the mandating of masks for Elementary School children. As well as STOP the mandating of in-school testing for Covid-19 for the 2021-22 school year. NYC parents want the same rights as the rest of New York State.

NY State has eliminated indoor mask rules for schools beginning June 7th, 2021.

The New York State DOE announced in February 2021 that in-school testing for Covid-19 is NOT mandatory - but it is in NYC schools.

Chancellor Porter has announced that in-school testing and mask mandates will still be in effect in the Fall, and now with no option for remote learning. This leaves parents no alternative.

In October of 2020, the World Health Organization has reported that, “studies suggest that transmission from staff-to-staff was most common, and student-to-student spread more rare”. The burden our young children are carrying is NOT theirs to carry. It never has been. Their mental health is not being considered; they need to see facial expressions, and should have the right to take their masks off at their individual desks, that are spaced 3 feet apart and constantly sanitized. Patrons in NYC restaurants have the option to take masks off once they are seated at their table. Why can't our children take their masks off in their classroom?

NYC schools constantly say they follow CDC guidelines. However, the CDC disagrees with mandating in-school testing for Covid-19. The CDC quotes on their website "If a school is implementing a testing strategy, testing should be offered on a voluntary basis. It is unethical and illegal to test someone who does not want to be tested, including students whose parents or guardians do not want them to be tested."

Furthermore, under Education Law 906 as it relates to communicable diseases, districts may NOT exclude students from in-person instruction who are healthy or asymptomatic, and whose parent/guardian does not give consent for Covid-19 testing (unless directed otherwise by local health authorities). Why are NYC health authorities disregarding the importance of our children's psychological well-being? It has been over a year and as the rest of the state returns to normalcy with positive cases rapidly dropping, our NYC children should absolutely have the same option.

More Covid-19 testing in schools also leads to more school closures and more interrupted school time. It has been over a year now since Covid-19 appeared; and we are only gaining more proof that Elementary school children are not at all in a high risk category, and do not spread Covid-19.

The CDC has also reported that 85% of people who tested positive for Covid-19 has said they “always” wore a mask - so this brings the question on whether or not masks are even effective.

It is at the point where clarity is slowly coming to surface, but logic is being thrown away. Are these mandates REALLY about the health concerns of our children? Or is our children's education being thrown into a mix of politics?

Please sign and help our young children; OUR FUTURE! They deserve a sense of normalcy just like the rest of the state.
