I am a New York City public school teacher and parent of two young children (8 and 3).  As you know, NYC public schools will be opening this month for hybrid learning, while some children will learn remotely from home.

I believe that, to help NYC public school teachers, paraprofessionals and service providers who are also parents, you should allow us to work from home on days that we are programmed to teach solely remotely.

Currently, I am programmed to teach only my remote students on certain days.  I have been told by the DOE that I must report to work on those days and teach into a computer in an empty room.

My commute is over an hour, and involves a subway train and a bus.  Surely working from home on these days would make it less likely that teachers (and paras and other service providers) like me would expose themselves to contagion while commuting on the MTA.

in addition, my elementary-aged child will not be in school on these days, because she is participating in hybrid learning.  So, rather than being home with her myself on these days, I have to seek other childcare. Mayor de Blasio’s 100,000 seat childcare has failed to materialize.  Many New Yorkers, including teachers and other DOE employees, are left scrounging for people to take care of our precious children.

All of the DOE teachers, paras and service providers I know who are parents felt hung out to dry this past spring by a DOE and UFT that ignored us and expected us to do two jobs at once.  Please fix that mistake by giving us the flexibility to teach from home now.
