We would like to create a "Slow Zone" around the area of McGolrick Park

This petition had 286 supporters

The NYC DOT is currently accepting applications from communities to have Slow Zones implemented in appropriate locations throughout the city. A group of parents in the vicinity of McGolrick Park are working on a request for a Slow Zone in our neighborhood, but to be successful we must show that you support it!

The DOT writes of the program,
"Neighborhood Slow Zones are a community-based program that reduces the speed limit from 30 mph to 20 mph and adds safety measures within a select area in order to change driver behavior. The ultimate goal of the Neighborhood Slow Zone program is to lower the incidence and severity of crashes. Slow Zones also seek to enhance quality of life by reducing cut-through traffic and traffic noise in residential neighborhoods."

Additional information is available on their website:

Based on the DOT's requirements for the borders of Slow Zones, we are suggesting our Slow Zone be located between the BQE, McGuinness Boulevard, Nassau Avenue, and Van Dam Street.

This meets the basic criteria:
- It is a self-contained area surrounded by strong boundaries.
- It is composed of local, residential streets which will not become overly congested by a Slow Zone.

We believe the streets around McGolrick Park are an ideal location for a Slow Zone. The area has significant foot traffic, especially young children and the elderly walking between the (2) schools, the park, grocery store, and multiple churches within the zone, yet we are continually faced with drivers racing along the park and large trucks taking illegal short-cuts through our neighborhood. A Slow Zone would be an appropriate and welcome response to these hazards.

The DOT creates Slow Zones in response to applications from communities and each application must document support from local 'stakeholders'. We need signatures now to show to the Community Board Transportation Committee on April 16th. With their support we can submit the final application to the DOT by the May 31st deadline.
