Making renting fair, safe and certain in the NT

Making renting fair, safe and certain in the NT

The Northern Territory Government has announced a commitment to conducting a comprehensive review of the Residential Tenancy Act. As part of that review, the Government will be seeking submissions from interested people and organisations about changes to the legislation.
The Tenants' Advice Service will be advocating for stronger protections for tenants. Our aim is to ensure every Territorian has access to housing that is FAIR, SAFE and CERTAIN.
We can’t do it alone. We are seeking to gain the support and input from as many people as possible to ensure our voices are heard.
Key areas of reform include:
- an independent bond board
- greater security in rental housing and protection for victims of domestic and family violence
- certainty through longer notice periods and longer term tenancies and removing arbitrary evictions
- fairness through reasonable rents, maintenance of standards, and prohibiting discrimination
