Tired of dangerously driven, ridiculously noisy, backfiring vehicles day and night?

Being kept awake? Babies or children woken up throughout the night? Dog terrified?

Shellharbour Road, Harbour Boulevard, Cove Boulevard - Are you a resident of the Shellharbour (and specifically in my case Shell Cove) area and are you tired of constant procession of modified, noisy and often dangerously driven vehicles that run circuits around our streets all all hours of the day? I know I am.  Exhausted in fact.

 

I know local police are stretched already but I think this aspect of community wellbeing is one that is affecting quite a few people and is relatively easily addressed. Not being able to sleep in your own home because of ludicrous car noise levels isn’t something that I would expect anyone to have to suffer in our community. The aim of this petition is to have some community representation to bolster a request to Shellharbour Council and the local Police that some resources are allocated to tackle this problem.

 

There is some quite clear legislation on the issue:

 

The Protection of the Environment (Noise Control) Regulation 2017 makes it an offence to use a vehicle on the road that emits excessive exhaust noise.

 

Operators and owners are responsible for ensuring that noise from their vehicles is kept within reasonable levels. Under the Protection of the Environment Operations (Noise Control) Regulation 2017, the EPA aims to prevent high noise levels from vehicles caused by

·         lack of maintenance

·         deliberate tampering

·         inappropriate use

 

The NSW EPA (Environment Protection Authority) does have provision for providing them with details of vehicles that are believe dot be in contravention of this legislation but I truly believe that the problem is so prevalent in our area that it requires some police intervention.
