I am originally from Quirindi and rather than mining helping this district it has denuded it of water, grass and people. The Werris CReek coalmine (10 minutes up the road) has led to dust, increased breathing difficulties amongst the aged in Quirindi (my parents) and add to this the drought there are many shops empty or abandoned. Mining the Liverpool plain WILL take out valuable food growing resources at a time when food scarcity is an increasing problem worldwide. It WILL also kill off the remaining koalas that live quietly in the numerous habitat corridors on the plains. I have noticed that Gunnedah has designs on this area for tourism reasons but my problems with that are a) the mining exploration area exists inside the Liverpool plains shire b) The mayor of Gunnedah has no right to get involved in trying to influence state or federal ministers c) the koalas present need to remain so and should not be moved as previous experience of this anywhere where koalas live will tell you they do not cope.
The Gamilaroi community at Caroona are involved in the fight I believe. Please if any of you care about where your food comes from, sustainable energy development or preserving indigenous lands for indigenous people and animals
Spread the word. I SAY F NO TO SHENHUA OR ANY OTHER FOREIGN COMPANY THAT SUBVERTS OUR LEGAL PROCESSES!
