Conduct a thorough community consultation process on the Parramatta Road Urban Renewal Strategy

My name is Alison Chen, and I am the Youth Member for Strathfield in the 2015 YMCA NSW Youth Parliament Legislative Assembly.
The NSW government has proposed a major renewal strategy for 60,000 apartments to be built on Parramatta Road in eight strategic precincts by 2050: Granville, Auburn, Homebush, Burwood, Kings Bay, Taverners Hill, Leichhardt and Camperdown. The development relies on the diversion of traffic that would normally be on Parramatta Road to the Westconnex motorway, reducing the amount of traffic on Parramatta Road and hence making it suitable for residential development.
Reports have emerged that UrbanGrowth NSW, the government's property development agency had initially organised a three-month long campaign which comprised of around 170 events allowing the public to view plans and make submissions regarding the project, but most of the events were cancelled. There have only been two events held, one in Granville and another in Ashfield regarding the project. This has meant most of the communities impacted by this development have not been consulted properly or consulted at all and have not been provided with adequate opportunities to look at plans and voice their concerns.
In a video by UrbanGrowth about the Parramatta Road renewal strategy, one of the last sentences in the voiceover is "Planning works best when many people and points of view are heard." This is exactly what this proposal is currently lacking, due to the cancellation of all but two community consultation events.
Parramatta Road is one of the main transport corridors in the Strathfield electorate. Having used it for many years as a transport corridor, it is essential that frequent users like me are informed about this project and make submissions to the project as this urban development would greatly affect the way I travel around Sydney, housing density along Parramatta Road and the facilities and amenity of my local area.
This petition urges the NSW government to backtrack to the community consultation stage and hold all 170 events that were initially planned to provide the community with extensive opportunities to view the proposal and make submissions to the plan. This would allow for a project that properly addresses the needs and concerns of residents, which is particularly important given the significance of this renewal strategy to the future of Parramatta Road as a residential area and as a transport corridor.
I urge you to sign this petition so that it can be debated during the 2015 Youth Parliament sitting week. If it is passed, it will be given as a recommendation to the NSW Government. Your voice is important. Please help make a difference.
