NSF: Due to recent hurricanes, please extend the deadlines for the GRFP Fellowship Program

This petition made change with 895 supporters!

In light of the natural phenomena that have occurred recently - particularly hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria – we are requesting that the NSF extend this year's deadlines for their Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP).

The GRFP program “recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students in NSF-supported science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines who are pursuing research-based Master's and doctoral degrees at accredited United States institutions” (GRFP website) by providing funding for up to three years, which includes student tuition, fees, and a living stipend. The program awards fellowships to outstanding students from U.S. states and territories, and has provided invaluable support to thousands of students in their pursuit of research.

The devastation brought by this year’s powerful hurricanes and storms has left millions of people without power, particularly in Puerto Rico and in the states of Florida and Texas, and in some cases power and phone service are not expected to be reestablished for months (see references below). Without power and/or access to internet, students affected by these storms may be at a great disadvantage, and consequently may have difficulties submitting all application materials by the current deadlines (October 23 – November 2 2017, depending on the discipline). For many students, this could limit their access to the programs they have worked so hard to enter, and/or to the research laboratories and projects that they are most passionate about.

Therefore, we are requesting that the National Science Foundation please consider extending the GRFP program's deadlines this year, in order to help the students that have already been so affected by these natural phenomena. We thank the foundation for the strong support it has brought to so many students, and we hope that it strongly considers our petition.
