Rudi Gericke was arrested in Bethlehem on 8 January 2023 following the assault on Reuter Sorour and the murder of Evan Sorour. Rudi Gericke was already out on bail following the assault on patrons at the Ficksburg Golf Club on 06 August 2022. Charges against him include GBH, common assault and malicious property damage. This is the story of Evan Felix Sorour.

Evan Felix Sorour was a vibrant 28-year-old stock farmer, callously murdered in the prime of his life.

An excerpt from the prologue of his father, Reuter’s, eulogy reads:

"Each of us is formed & moulded by family, society, the laws governing that society and religion.

Evan was a 4th generation farmer on Emma. His murderer, until recently, was the 3rd generation farming the adjoining farm. They should have been on the same side, doing the same thing, striving towards similar goals.

Despite media reports, there was never any quarrel about cattle.

In fact, no quarrel, no motive, no reason, no sense, and no possible benefit to anyone.

Despite this, he followed us for 900m from the house he lives in before killing Evan.

A trail of destruction spanning many, many years lies behind this man.

He was emboldened by the support or at the very least, the lack of action of friends, family, colleagues, business associates and others.

The failure of the legal system also emboldened him. The very system that gave him back the firearm which he used to kill Evan, after having it confiscated, because he recently assaulted another fellow farmer.

In the coming days, months and years, all those who continue to support this behaviour, should be called to account for it.

They are complicit in Evan’s murder."
