For 46 years, the Topeka Zoo has had elephants within their animal collection. Now, thousands of animal rights activists from outside our community- around the world - are urging the Topeka City Council to send our elephants to The Elephant Sanctuary in Hohenwald Tennessee. We do not believe this is in the best interest of Tembo and Sunda.
Tembo and Sunda have resided at the Topeka Zoo for 36 years. They have a bond. To the citizens of Topeka and members of our zoo, our elephants are not property nor are they political pawns. They are living beings. They are part of our zoo family and part of our community.
Now is the time to tell outside animal rights activists that WE know what is in the best interest of the animals at OUR community zoo. Now is the time to do what is in the best interest of Tembo and Sunda. The Zoo leadership has the expertise to determine the fate of Tembo and Sunda. We trust their decision.
