During the May 20th board meeting, three of our board members approved staff being able to bring weapons on campus with district approval. No other guidelines were set. 

As parents, our biggest fear on school campuses is gun violence. Staff members may have permits to carry, but they do not have the safety training to carry on campus around children. Stressful situations arise, and accidents happen.

We request that parents be notified when a staff member is approved to carry a weapon on campus at least 7 days before the approval goes into effect. This notification should list the staff member’s name, job title, type of weapon, and qualifications for approval. We also request that there be a committee of staff and parents to set guidelines for this new policy. The committee must be recorded and decisions honored. 

Communication and collaboration with parents is paramount to the success of our schools. If the board truly believes in parental rights, they will honor this petition by putting forth policy in the next board meeting that includes parent notification.
