Notebooks, Not Chromebooks
The Issue
NOTEBOOKS, NOT CHROMEBOOKS!
Calling everyone in Wake County to petition the Wake County Public School System (WCPSS) School Board to implement a districtwide low-tech policy across all schools in Wake County to promote effective learning and to protect the health and wellbeing of all WCPSS students.
Our children are experiencing daily eyestrain and headaches due to excessive Chromebook use each day in our public schools. The U.S. Surgeon Generalreleased a report earlier this year about the harms of excessive screen use in kids, and how excessive screen use may be contributing to an epidemic of myopia. Furthermore, educational research has shown that excessive technology use in classrooms is actually detrimental to student learning. These findings led to a Congressional hearingearlier this year on the harms of excessive screen use amongchildren. Our kids deserve better and should not be saddled with tech devices that are known to cause distractions, eyestrain, and myopia all because big tech companies have a financial incentive to push high tech use in public schools. Additionally, the maintenance and upkeep of Chromebooks along with all ofthe district-wide subscriptions to multiple apps is costingWCPSS millions of dollars each year. This is especially worrisome considering that the district is facing a budget shortfall after federal funding cuts. Our children have been complaining about lost educational time due to tech glitches and increased student anxiety due to tech failures during exams, etc.
The Surgeon General’s report calls on schools to "invest in physical textbooks and prioritize pen-and-paper curricula, hands-on activities, and social activities for all grade levels." This is something that other counties in North Carolina have done! For example, please see the resolution recently passed from Burke County in NC. We are advocating that Wake County implements a similar district-wide policy to reduce widespread and excessive screen use in all elementary, middle and high schools. Let us all work together to make Wake County a national leader on judicious tech use in our classrooms!
Several students spoke about this issue at the recent Wake County School Board Meeting on October 6, 2026. You can watch it here: https://www.youtube.com/live/tTn4-VqS2T8
