THE DEATH OF LMSG

On Friday, June 9th, Little Miss Solid Gold (LMSG) was murdered for being a potential liability to Tree House Humane Society (TH). After being moved around MANY times (from TH, to an ill-equipped adopter, back to TH (Bucktown location), back to TH headquarters (after the Bucktown location closed), and then to the new facility), she developed a history of biting. And while cat bites are not uncommon, the response by upper management, to euthanize LMSG was. Since 1971, TH had established itself as THE model for a cage-less, no-kill shelter. They took the cats no one else took. They never euthanized an otherwise healthy and adoptable cat (which LMSG was). Despite the many offers from volunteers, staff, and rescue groups to adopt LMSG (no-strings-attached), new leadership, presumably directed by a misguided board of directors, took her life.

IT COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED

Hours before her murder, a dozen or so Tree House supporters arrived at the new ($7 million dollar) Tree House shelter hoping to make their objections about the  scheduled "euthanasia" known. They represented hundreds of people who protested online, after the proposed "euthanasia" was leaked.  Despite their best efforts, LMSG was murdered shortly after 12pm. When news of the murder was leaked, hundreds of people took to the internet and in a matter of a few hours, their outcry reached so far and wide that news sources like DNA.info, NBC, and the Chicago Reader took notice.

The interim executive director, and director of development referred to the volunteers and donors who opposed their decision as "crazy cat ladies whose only weapon was social media." They are right, we were crazy to have given them our time and money. They took millions from their supporters under false pretenses (don't other people go to prison for that?). We gave to them with the condition that they stick to true to their mission statement. We donated thousands of hours and helped saved thousands of lives through our work as fosters and volunteers. We helped raise money by running in marathons, hosting and attending events, and working for unlivable wages.  They are right, we will use the power of social media to call for the removal of the board of directors and current leadership.

Many of us still want TH to succeed and be a refuge for cats like LMSG. With a new board of directors and senior staff, TH can regain the support of the animal welfare community and once again shine as a model no-kill humane organization.

By signing our petition you will help the real TH and its supporters remain vigilant in our efforts to rescue, rehabilitate and home the cats nobody wants.

A CHANGED MISSION

While protesters marched outside, TH staff quietly changed their mission statement. In addition to other changes, they removed the words "no-kill." This historically no-kill shelter is no longer the refuge they once were for Chicago's most at-risk felines.

The consequences of this changed mission are vast and include the likelihood of future reactive cats being murdered, or never even admitted, the likelihood that future staff and volunteers will not report bites (for fear of the consequences to the cat), and the potential for future mission changes.

CENSORSHIP & LACK OF TRANSPARENCY

In addition to changing their mission statement, TH, in an attempt at damage control, started blocking anyone who did not support their decision from being able to comment on their Facebook page. In just 2 hours their Facebook rating went from a 4.0 to a 3.0. It had taken them five years to get to a 4.0. In addition to the hundreds of supporters who were concerned about the new direction TH was taking, many current Tree House employees voiced their concern, one even quit on-the-spot, and they were lectured for leaking information and essentially told their jobs would be in jeopardy if they continued.

By hiding their true intentions and blocking public outcry TH has shown a clear lack of respect for the animal welfare community who had supported them. We demand transparency and integrity from Tree House Humane Society after their abrupt abandonment of those very ideals.

FRAUD

The organization accepted millions in funds and in-kind donations (including volunteer service) under false pretenses (they are no longer a no-kill) and has yet to deliver on all that was promised at their new $7 million dollar facility (i.e. the much anticipated cat cafe, full-service low-cost clinic, and humane education center--it's important to note that these programs are all revenue generating--meaning more lives saved!).

We have been told that we are too passionate about this issue and we agree, we are. We are a dedicated community who still wants TH to succeed and be a refuge for cats like LMSG. How is that possible? With a new board of directors and senior staff.

By signing our petition you will help the real TH and its supporters remain vigilant in our efforts to rescue, rehabilitate and home the cats nobody wants.
