The Issue

4.8 ★   4.2 ★   3.6 ★

We see these numbers beside businesses every day and immediately form a judgment. Google has made this so familiar that we rarely stop to ask:

Should businesses be publicly scored like this at all?

This petition is not about fake reviews. It is not about silencing criticism or asking Google to become a better judge. It challenges the rating system itself.

POPULARITY IS NOT QUALITY

A person who is disliked by many people is not necessarily a bad person. A person who is liked by almost everyone is not necessarily a good person.

We understand this when we think about people. So why do we forget it when we judge businesses?

A good business does not have to please everyone. It may have unusual rules, strong principles, or simply choose to do things differently.

Some people may love it for exactly those reasons. Others may dislike it for exactly the same reasons.

Being different naturally creates disagreement.

Customers should be free to express those opinions. They should be free to praise a business, criticize it, recommend it, or say they hated it.

But Google does something more.

It turns those opinions into stars, averages them, and attaches a single number to the business: 4.1 ★

One person may be judging the service. Another the price. Another may simply dislike a rule or what the business stands for.

These are not measurements of the same thing. Yet Google combines them into one score.

Popularity is not quality. Opinion is not measurement.

THE SCORE CAN CHANGE WHAT IT SCORES

A public score does not merely describe a business. It can change the business.

When owners know that a fraction of a star can affect whether customers walk through the door, the question can change from:

“What kind of business do I want to create?”

to:

“Will this hurt my Google rating?”

The safest path is to please as many people as possible and avoid being too different.

That may produce businesses with higher ratings. It does not necessarily produce better businesses.

Innovation and originality often begin with doing something that not everyone understands or likes.

A system that rewards being liked can punish being different.

NOW CONSIDER WHO CONTROLS THE SCORE

Google is not a neutral public institution. It is one of the world's most powerful private corporations, dominating how people search for information and find businesses online.

Reviews and ratings strengthen Google's ecosystem and its business. But while Google benefits from the system, businesses live with the consequences of the score.

Google creates the rating system, sets the rules, calculates the score, and displays it to the world.

That is an extraordinary imbalance of power.

And because Google has become so deeply embedded in how people find businesses, this is not a system that an independent business can simply ignore.

A system does not become fair simply because it has become familiar, widespread, and difficult to avoid.

WHAT THIS PETITION DEMANDS

The demand is simple:

END GOOGLE’S PUBLIC STAR-RATING SYSTEM FOR BUSINESSES.

Customers should remain free to write reviews — positive or negative. Businesses should remain free to respond.

Let people read those opinions and decide for themselves.

But stop converting different human opinions into a single numerical score attached to a business.

Opinions should remain opinions. They should not become a verdict.

THIS WILL NOT END WITH SIGNATURES

This petition is not meant to end on Change.org.

If enough people stand together, we will take this demand to the media, business organizations, regulators and public officials — and, where possible, pursue legal action.

The more people who join, the harder this issue becomes to ignore.

You do not have to own a business to support this. You only have to believe that not everything becomes better when we turn it into a score.

A BUSINESS IS MORE THAN A NUMBER.
