Not a BOUNDARY ISSUE,rather a CITY WIDE ISSUE - RENOVICTIONS & DEMOVICTIONS MUST STOP
The Issue
While some may say that the lawlessness of both renovictions and demovictions are the responsibility of the Federal Government, talk with one of them and now it's a Municipal issue ?.Convenient when both sides are busy pointing the finger at each other, while raiders are coming in and taking over our City. With this, new people are moving into apartments, homes and commercial units, that once were homes and businesses of Hamilton citizens, forced out of their units under the guise of "renovations".If they are residential, they are supposed to get first refusal to move back in,once renovations are complete, but at a newer, usually much higher price (twice-three times),than they had originally signed a lease for-with very few options-take it or look elsewhere.I'm not insinuating that each and every landlord/building owner/developer is being greedy. Some have had the misfortune of dealing with habitual renters who once in their building, don't pay their rent or abide by the terms of their leases/rentals and take advantage of the slow movements to get them out. That really makes it that much harder for the abiding renter/lease holder, who does hold up their end of the bargain, while dealing with sneaky, secretive and underhanded owners. There should be a CODE OF ETHICS in place, when dealing with these types of sensitive issues. One that keeps all parties aware of what is occurring and holding each of them ACCOUNTABLE and HONEST.Communication is key.No one should have to experience this level of uncertainty and insecurity, with regards to what our future holds, being held ransom by unscrupulous people, skirting the law.Not sure why the level of renovictions of both residential and now small/commercial businesses, are continuing to occur in such great numbers, with an increase in demo-victions as well.On the City Of Hamilton web site, under Doing Business the motto is Start, grow and operate your business here.I have for 25 years and now someone,is doing their best to get 2 viable businesses removed from 845 King Street East-Global Spices (in business for 45 years-16 at that location) and 847 King Street East-Kool Stuff Toys (in business for 25 years-17 at this location). There is ZERO concern for either of our lives and livelyhoods. So much discussion has taken place thru members of City Counsel,City Hall and the Mayor, thru the media that we should all support local and small business. If that is the case, who is the person(s) responsible for all of these renovictions/demovictions continuing to be allowed to remove people from where they live and or operate their businesses ?.Despite this being in the vicinity of Ward 3,you may say,why did I get a copy of this -THIS IS A CITY WIDE ISSUE-not held to any one Ward in particular. We have always been firm believers in giving back to our community, something that you won't find with greedy landlords, property owners and developers - unless it's a headache. Please review what OUR CITY IS SUPPOSED TO STAND FOR Our Commitment to Our Community | City of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada .Very disheartened that even after following 2 years of Covid, shutdown for 3 lockdowns, curbside pickup only, diminished customers/hours and our building's furnace still not working since November 29,2021,we still come out the other side and start to make some head way, when we get the rug pulled out from under our feet again ?.The new owners are all about putting new individuals interests (who don't even yet live here),brand new heating units in their yet unoccupied and unrented apartments, yet don't spend a dime to keep their tenants, who have been paying them rent,a reliable source of heating. This time is it City approved ?.The City of Hamilton, which I have always defended and have always found reasons to be proud of,is getting a very nasty reputation of leaving it's residents to fend for themselves,in favor of taking money from greedy landlords/building owners and developers from outside of Hamilton. These owners, some who receive Grants from the City, are also receiving carte blanche treatment, while some of our residents and small businesses are receiving unjustified mistreatment and ousted from their homes and businesses, with no regard. If I am wrong about this, please prove this to me,I would be glad to listen.Thank you for taking the time to read my concerns,I appreciate it.I would also, greatly appreciate your support in signing and sharing this petition,in order to create a viable means of being able to stand up and have a say,in rallying against this type of growing Monopoly styled take over of our buildings and how this will not only change our personal and business lives, but that of our entire City of Hamilton.I want to thank each and every one of you who have taken the time to show your support of not only our situation, but renovictions and demovictions, that are being faced by numerous friends and Hamiltonians throughout the city,as well. This is supposed to be a FREE Petition, thru Change.org,so if you see a donation area, please change it to $0.I am not asking any of you to pay to sign this and I am not receiving any money for doing this. For those of you,who were asking about posting comments or concerns,I would ask that you please direct them to Andrea Horwath mayor@hamilton.ca
,the Committee Of Adjustment cofa@hamilton.ca,as well as your Ward Counselors. We all have to do our part in getting this issue resolved and help keep people in their places, that they call home and small business.Thank you all again,I greatly appreciate this !.Take care & stay well,Jeff and The Kool Stuff Toys Family.
