Bring back the Norwalk High School Music Department

Bring back the Norwalk High School Music Department

The Issue

Norwalk High School is known across the city, state, and nation for its outstanding music program, whether it be the award-winning marching band, the phenomenal orchestra, or the beautiful choir. The students love performing all the music they've worked so hard on, and many consider it to be the best part of high school.

However, all of this is in danger of ending due to the recent COVID-19 outbreak. Norwalk Public Schools is planning on canceling the indoor Winter Percussion season, the indoor Color Guard season, the Norwalk Jazz Festival, all spring concerts, the musical, and more. This is a huge punch in the gut to the Seniors, who have worked so hard for four years only to have their last year canceled, and a huge financial blow to the music department as a whole.

It is perfectly reasonable to be concerned about this disease outbreak. However, outright cancellations are not the proper way to respond. It would be more prudent to simply postpone the events until cases of COVID-19 start to decline. Many of the events that have been scheduled are in May, which is around a month and a half away. Nobody knows for sure what will happen in terms of the coronavirus in that time. Therefore, it is unreasonable to cancel important events this far in development.

Several students that I have spoken with have shown disappointment and frustration at these cancellations, and those same students feel that it's unjust. We would like the school district to reconsider its decision to do this. This is the seniors' last chance to perform with their lifelong peers. Please sign this petition to have our voices heard. The entire Norwalk High School music department is counting on you.
