Northwestern High School Alumni Association: Stop the closing and name change of Northwestern High School in Detroit!

The Issue

Community leaders, union officials, concerned residents, parents, students and Northwestern High School Alumni will continue to protest the closure of the high school. Northwestern High School has served hundreds of thousands of students for nearly 100 years.

Northwestern High School building houses an Olympic-sized swimming pool as well as the city’s only planetarium outside of the Michigan Science Center. Northwestern boasts some of Michigan’s crème de la crème as its alumni. Baseball Hall of Famer, Willie Horton, Congressman John Conyers, Grammy Award winning artist, Ray Parker Jr. and countless others who have left an indelible mark on American culture are just some of the school’s esteemed graduates.

After the end of the current semester, Northwestern High School’s current programming and name will be no more. The school will become Detroit Collegiate Preparatory High School at Northwestern. Make no mistake; the distinction of “at Northwestern” refers only to the grounds on which the new school stands.

Detroit Collegiate Prep will admit students through an application process. Undoubtedly some children will not be accepted into the school. Where will they go?

The Northwestern High School Alumni Association is staging a written protest for all concerning communities’ members to participate. The Big N.O. is located at 2200 West Grand Boulevard in Detroit, Michigan.
