Friends & Allies,

Thanks to the hard work of everyone who has written, called and met in person with City Council member, and shown up at the last two City Council meetings the Council is now poised to actually vote on a Gaza Ceasefire resolution at their upcoming meeting on April 16.  The resolution is copied below, as well

We, especially, thank Council Members Sokup and Zuccolotto for crafting and introduction this resolution for a ceasefire in Gaza.  This is a good resolution.

It is crucial that we have the largest crowd yet at Council on April 16.   Please come and bring others with you.

CITY OF NORTHFIELD, MN

CITY COUNCIL RESOLUTION 2024-XXX

TITLE OF RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, the Northfield City Council condemns all forms of antisemitism, Islamophobia, racism, and bigotry in Northfield, we welcome people from all backgrounds and beliefs in our city, and advocate for the dignity and safety of all people; and

WHEREAS, we oppose all violence that leads to the loss of innocent civilian lives and ongoing human suffering in both Israel and Palestine; and

WHEREAS, as of April 10th, the United Nations reports over 33,200 Palestinians and over 1,200

Isrealis have been killed in Gaza with over 81,000 people injured, over 70,000 homes destroyed, and 1.7 million people displaced [1]; and

WHEREAS, the United States provides billions of dollars in military aid to the Israeli government which thereby ties tax dollars from Northfield residents to that aid; and

WHEREAS, more than one hundred US City Councils have passed similar resolutions [2] in a grassroots effort to call on Federally elected officials to act in their duly elected roles related to foreign affairs to bring about a ceasefire in Gaza,

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL THAT:

The City of Northfield City Council hereby urges our national leaders to work urgently and

diligently toward:

  1. A cessation of hostilities directed to innocent civilians, especially children;
  2. A lasting, bilateral ceasefire in Gaza to allow humanitarian aid to the civilian population;
  3. Significant financial support for said humanitarian aid;
  4. The immediate release of all hostages.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL THAT:

The Clerk shall send a copy of this resolution, duly adopted, to the elected Federal

representatives serving Northfield, and to the President of the United States.
