I am advocating for installation of hot water for the public amenities block at NN Rockpools, mainly on behalf of our elderly community members who swim regularly but find it difficult to sustain over the colder months. I started swimming at the rock pools a few years ago and marvelled at the energy and positivity of the seniors down at the pools each morning. I have spoken to many in the 70-90yr age group who attribute their robust health and daily motivation to regular swimming.
The positive outlook and social engagement this activity provides cannot be underestimated and most of this community have grown up and been regular contributors to Narrabeen, in a myriad of ways, for many years. A core group of senior locals have tried numerous times to get hot water installed through the council, but to date have been unsuccessful. Some currently carry 2 litre plastic cartons all the way from the car park, filled with warm water, to dowse over themselves post swim, to extend the time they can keep swimming over Autumn and Winter - but sadly most stop swimming and become quite depressed at having to do so.
The idea is to have a hot water option which is efficient and free to our local seniors. I used to swim at Manly when they had timed, token fed machines for the outdoor amenities block and that appeared to work well. There are probably more modern solutions available now, but the underlying premise is that ‘money and vandalism’ concerns could be addressed with this type of system. Solar panels cold provide cost efficiency and it must be noted that the swimming club located upstairs from the public amenities block currently have hot water). Also note that Mosman Council have installed free hot water showers near the swimming baths at Balmoral Beach which are solar powered. Tokens (or similar) could be made available through our local post office or chemist (both of which are regularly patronised by our senior community), FREE, on presentation of their senior cards and available for purchase by other community members.
This is an worthy endeavour for our community in general and especially for our elderly members. This proposal gives everyone options to sustain a healthy and active lifestyle throughout the year and fully utilises our existing recreational resources. In my view it is a worthy and important exercise. There is so much awareness of public mental health and we need to do as much as possible to encourage more people to engage in activities which improve health overall and year round.
