As Arizona reopens, many students and professors will be returning to the University in the fall, but COVID-19 cases have continued to rise. Both students and professors will be at risk if NAU does not take necessary precautions to slow the spread of the virus. While many students are given the option to attend remotely, professors are given almost no say in the matter- this is a massive problem. NAU faculty and staff should not be required to risk their lives for the sake of the university giving their students a “college experience”. We should allow professors the ability to choose if their course will be taught online, or in-person. This is by no means a radical idea, as other universities like Harvard University, Cambridge University, Hampton University, have already converted completely to online-only for fall semester, and these universities are located in places with far less COVID-19 cases than Arizona. Forcing professors to attend in person is risky and negligent, and it is the responsibility of NAU to allow them a safe working environment at their choice. Professors should be given an option to teach their class online or in-person, and students should be notified of their decision accordingly.
