The Conservative Administration at Northampton Borough Council is progressing plans to spend millions of pounds of taxpayers' money on opening up Northampton's main shopping street, Abington Street, to traffic. Members of the public and owners of the shops on Abington Street have not been given a fair opportunity to voice their concerns and David Mackintosh, leader of the Council is yet to provide a business argument based on any statistical evidence to suggest that opening the street to traffic would improve the shopping experience for the public or generate more business for shop owners. Environmental implications and noise pollution levels have also not been examined. Furthermore, at a time of austerity, where Northampton Borough Council is cutting funding to vital services, the Council is borrowing £6m over 20 years to pay for this pointless project.
