NORTH SYDNEY:UNNECESSARY DESTRUCTION OF TREES ON HIGH ST AND WHALING RD

The issue

The NSW Government is planning to destroy almost all of the trees in our North Sydney neighbourhood as part of its traffic plan but it will not achieve any material improvement in traffic flow.

We object in the strongest terms to the unnecessary destruction of hundreds of trees in our immediate vicinity. These trees are important. They provide shade, reduce temperature and pollution and shield the eastern residential areas from the expressway and the North Sydney business district.

The Government is making our community roads more dangerous.

The Government has lost control of the planning process. The Government approves development which has no purpose other than to generate profit for contractors.

We believe the Government can do better, especially when the Premier claims that greening our city is one of his Premier Priorities. The trees marked purple in the image are marked for destruction.  You can see that is most of them.

In designing this "upgrade", there has been no genuine attempt to engage the community in a meaningful way. Consultation is not targeted at information necessary for genuine consultation is not disclosed or buried.

There are viable and less expensive alternatives but the Government has stopped listening. It's engineers are just defending their mistakes.

We call upon the New South Wales Government to:

  1.  Immediately stop all work (including tree removal) on that part of the Warringah Expressway Upgrade which affects North Alfred Street and High Street.
  2. Enter into genuine and good faith negotiations with the community to find an alternative plan which retains the ambience of the community while addressing its traffic management needs.
