Portishead is only 20 minutes away from Cribbs Causeway on the M5 motorway. Up until last summer, there was a bus service provided for this, and then suddenly, it was cancelled. It now means that people wanting to get to Cribbs Causeway for work or medical appointments, or social activity, now have to get a bus into Bristol Centre, cross over to the other side, and catch another bus to Cribbs, and then do the reverse when they have to get home. This takes about one and a half hours to get there, and the same on return. There is also the potential loss of employment opportunities at the huge out-of-town shopping complex, because of the time factor in getting there. Also, this service was used not only by Portishead residents, but also Clevedon residents, and others from outlying areas, to attend the Bristol Eye Hospital’s Retinal Unit where the treatment requires you not to drive. Finally, this shopping complex is an extremely popular one, and now many people will have to drive their cars there, causing more congestion on an already over-congested section of motorway, something which the current Government, and environmentalists are keen to avoid. There are many residents in Portishead who are definitely not happy with the current situation.
