Fourth of July Fun ?
Not if You're a Sea Turtle !
Everyone Loves Sea Turtles and they are reliant on us humans for their survival.North Palm Beach is a prime nesting site for sea
turtles. Large numbers of loggerhead, green and
leatherback turtles nest here from early May through
late August. Manatees also inhabit our area during the winter months.
The Fourth of July and fireworks in general create an increased threat to nesting sea turtles and hatchlings in our area.
Fireworks, that launch and explode, are littering the sand and water and the next day the beach and surrounding areas "look like a landfill from all the garbage".
The debris is a hazard for turtles during the peak of turtle nesting season and also affects other marine life.
“It can injure the birds and the turtles easily". "They consume that stuff and It’s also almost impossible to find a new sea turtle nest after the fourth”. "That's really unusual because this time of the year is the peak nesting season"."It's become an out-of-control situation."said field biologist Marye Marshall.
"Fireworks disorient turtles". There are a number of “false crawls,”which are when turtles come out on the beach, but are then scared back into the water.
“They’re very nearsighted on land, see movement and flashing lights, enough of that will impede their ability to come up and nest,” said the Loggerhead MarineLife Center.
