Change the North Haven Indian Mascot

This petition seeks to change the name of the North Haven, CT Indian mascot. There has been national conversation over the use of Native Americans on team names and mascots; most famously being the Washington Redskins. Many Native Americans groups have spoken out saying that it is offensive and disrespectful to appropriate their culture in this way. It is true in all forms from using a racial slur against Native Americans to simply an inaccurate name of the group. These names are not seen as an honor to the history and culture, but an insult to the race overall.
Towns and cities all around the country are starting to switch over to appropriate team names and mascots and it is time for North Haven to join the movement. Our town must take a stand and change the old and disrespectful ways people think about race.
Signing this petition will help for the first time formally get the attention of the North Haven Board of Education, allow for some serious discussion on this issue, and hopefully start the process in changing the mascot. Your signature is telling the Board of Education that you do not agree with the Indians as our team name.
