On December 7, 2015, the Board of Trustees of North East Independent School District of San Antonio, Texas voted 5-2 in favor of keeping the name of Robert E Lee High School, the second oldest High School in the district, which opened in 1958.
The initial controversy over the name of Robert E Lee High School was created by a Facebook post made by former San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro in June 2015 as anti- Confederate Hysteria was sweeping across the Country following the church shootings in Charleston, SC. At the time Castro made his post, he was serving in Barak Obama's Cabinet as HUD Secretary. Castro's post called for the NEISD Board to convene a committee to rename Robert E Lee High School after a "'more appropriate role model for young people."
The Board did finally vote after nearly six months of debate that included dozens of hours of public statements made by each side at the previous five monthly Board Meetings, tens of thousands of signatures gathered on petitions by each side, endless social media conversations, thousands of emails sent to Board Members and several stories in local TV, radio and print media on the issue.
However, on August 29, 2017, in a Special Called Board Meeting that did not allow any Public Comment, the NEISD Trustees took less than 45 minutes to reverse their previous decision and voted 7-0 in favor of Changing the Name of Robert E Lee High School.
Since then, much has been learned about what went on behind the scenes to bring about this stunning reversal. The purpose of this petition is not to bring to light the corruption and collusion that made the Board's most recent vote possible, it is to send them a message that this fight is not over and we are pushing back.
A School Board is an elected body. As such, they serve at the will of the People. The NEISD Board is operating as if they are a Supreme Court of Appointed Judges serving lifelong terms. Since their 7-0 vote, they've held three more Special Called Meetings that have not allowed any Public Comments or Input into the process they're developing to change the Name of Robert E Lee High School.
In their minds, the 2015 5-2 Vote to Keep the Name of Robert E Lee High School that followed months of discussion and debate meant nothing. But their hastily called 7-0 vote is now carved in stone.

Please sign and circulate this Petition. Share it on Facebook, Twitter and other Social Media. Send the link out via email to your contacts. Do everything you can to help us reach out goal of 24,000 signatures. Our goal is to present this Petition to the NEISD Board this coming Monday, October 9 during their Regularly Scheduled Board Meeting. They need to be sent a very Strong Message that their rogue actions against Robert E Lee High School, its Alumni, Current Students and Community will not be tolerated. We are not their subjects - they work for us, they do not dictate terms to us. If they will not change their votes, they will be voted out and new Trustees who value All of Our History will take their place.
