Breaking the Disparities Seen in Mental Health Care

Breaking the Disparities Seen in Mental Health Care

The Issue

Legislation needs to be passed to ensure that insurance providers provide adequate and equal coverage for mental health disorders. Studies show that when comparing physical healthcare to mental health care, there is an obvious disparity between the two. For example, a survey conducted by the National Alliance on Mental Illness “analyzed 84 insurance plans in 15 states [and] found that a patient attempting to obtain mental health services was twice as likely to be denied coverage by a private insurer as a patient seeking medical or surgical care”. Furthermore, there are discrepancies that appear between physical and mental health care through the benefits that insurers provide, such as the size of provider networks.

Even though there are laws such as the Mental Health and Addictions Parity and Equity Act in 2008 that have been passed to guarantee parity between both physical and mental health care, the current legislation in place does not do enough to enforce and ensure fair and comparable coverage for mental health.

Sign this petition today to help fight for the creation and passing of new legislation that will ensure and enforce true parity between mental and physical healthcare.
