North Carolina Property Tax Exemption for Disabled Veterans

The Issue

As veterans of the United States Armed Forces, we, the undersigned, respectfully request that the North Carolina General Assembly consider implementing a property tax exemption for disabled veterans in our great state. This petition is personal to us because it directly affects our livelihoods and well-being.

Disabled veterans face unique challenges upon returning home from their service. Many of us live on fixed incomes and are unable to work due to our disabilities. The financial burden of property taxes can be overwhelming and place an additional strain on already limited resources.

According to data from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, there are over 100,000 disabled veterans residing in North Carolina alone. These brave men and women have sacrificed their physical and mental well-being in service to our country. It is only fair that we provide them with some relief by exempting them from property taxes.

Several states across the nation have already recognized this need and implemented similar exemptions for disabled veterans. For example, neighboring states such as Virginia, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Georgia all offer some form of property tax relief for disabled veterans.

By granting a property tax exemption specifically tailored for disabled veterans in North Carolina, we can alleviate financial burdens faced by those who have sacrificed so much for our freedom. This exemption would not only provide immediate relief but also ensure that these heroes can continue living with dignity and security in their own homes.

We understand that implementing such an exemption may require careful consideration of budgetary implications; however, we firmly believe that honoring those who have served should be a priority for our state government.

Therefore, we respectfully urge Speaker Tim Moore and members of the General Assembly to support legislation that grants a property tax exemption specifically targeted towards disabled veterans residing in North Carolina. By doing so, you will demonstrate your commitment to supporting those who have selflessly defended our great nation.

Let us come together as a community and show our gratitude to these brave men and women by providing them with the financial relief they deserve. We trust that you will give this petition the attention it deserves and take action to support our disabled veterans.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

SGM E-9 (RET) Bobby J. Key
