Oppose Animal Abuse? Say No to Ag-Gag!

The Issue

The factory farming industry is waging an all-out war on your right to know where your food comes from and trying to silence whistleblowers by passing “ag-gag” laws. These dangerous laws that criminalize filming animal abuse inside factory farms or slaughterhouses violate our constitutional rights and threaten animal welfare, food safety, workers’ rights, and the environment.

In the last several years, dozens of whistleblowers working at factory farms and slaughterhouses have uncovered criminal animal cruelty and shocking food safety hazards within the meat, dairy, and egg industries. These cases have led to:

  • The largest meat recall in U.S. history
  • Felony convictions for egregious cruelty to animals
  • Legal actions to enforce food safety and public health laws
  • Passage of new laws to provide increased legal protection for farmed animals
  • Significant corporate policy changes to improve treatment of farmed animals

Rather than working to improve conditions for animals or making food safer for consumers, the factory farming industry has responded to whistleblower complaints by lobbying for laws to prohibit workers from taking pictures or videos at any agricultural facility—ag-gag laws. These laws are designed to keep consumers in the dark about where their food comes from and how farmed animals are treated.

What You Can Do:

Right now an ag-gag bill is making its way through the North Carolina legislature and is expected to land on Governor McCrory’s desk soon. North Carolina is home to countless factory farms and meat, dairy, and eggs produced there are sold in restaurants and grocery stores across the country.

Please urge Governor McCrory to veto this dangerous and un-American ag-gag bill and put food safety, animal welfare, and free speech ahead of corporate profit and greed. Say No to Ag-Gag!
