I hate wearing shoes – they are like handcuffs for your feet. I'm a student in Cedar Rapids, IA. Day after day, we're expected to walk around school in uncomfortable shoes, which detracts from our comfort and our ability to focus on learning. I'm calling on fellow students, parents, and educators to help normalize walking around school in only socks.

Wearing socks, instead of constricting shoes, could contribute to a more relaxed and comfortable learning environment. Studies have shown that comfort can enhance focus and engagement. Why do we have to suffer from unnecessary discomfort when a simple change can make our school life much better?

Our schools have rules that are outdated and inflexible to student needs. Other places, like homes and certain cultural settings, allow individuals to be sock-footed freely and comfortably. Implementing a sock-only policy within classrooms and hallways would respect our collective comfort while maintaining safety and hygiene.

Our aim is to collaborate with school officials to ensure sanitary measures are in place, such as frequent floor cleaning and the option to wear indoor slippers for those who prefer them. This initiative can create happier and more productive students.
