Iowa state legislators have put forth a bill that would require every public school K-12  (excluding PE & Special Education) classrooms to install livestream cameras. There are several problems with this bill including:

Is there a need? What problems have been identified to require such an enormous investment? The bill was introduced by Rep. Norlin Mommsen (R-Dewitt) who views the teachers' agendas as "sinister".

What are the costs and how are we going to pay for them? The bill does not clearly define the initial investment, training and implementation costs, monitoring or costs to maintain. What funds are being used and which programs will be cut in order to rob Peter to pay Paul?

The last major problem with Iowa HF 2177 is according to FERPA or Family Educational Rights & Privacy Act of 1974, you need parental consent to release any minor's academic performance, records or attendance. Any videotaping, either directly or indirectly without the explicit consent of a parent or guardian is a clear violation of privacy. If Rep. Mommsen is worried about "sinister agendas" maybe background checks should be completed before giving strangers online access to our children's classrooms.

Please sign your name to oppose cameras in Iowa's classrooms.
