The Issue
Petition to Address Toxic Behavior, Discrimination, and Unsafe Environment at Classen SAS @ NE.
Misti Tope, Principal of Classen SAS High school has been terrorizing students and staff for the past 2 years. We, the concerned students and parents of Classen SAS, are bringing forth a petition to call attention to the ongoing toxic, hostile, and discriminatory actions of Mrs.Tope that have negatively impacted our school community. These behaviors, detailed below, have created an unsafe and unwelcoming environment for many students and staff, and we request immediate transfer of her out of our school.
Key Issues:
Inappropriate and Unsafe Behavior:
Mrs.Tope was reported pulling down a student’s skirt without their consent, to make it appear longer which is an invasive and inappropriate action, leaving students feeling uncomfortable and unsafe.
She constantly makes students feel uncomfortable by excessively touching, and rubbing on them.
A previously existing gender-neutral bathroom was removed, directly impacting the safety and inclusivity of LGBTQ students.
Unjust Treatment of Students:
A student, who had previously triggered three school lockdowns, continues to be allowed on campus despite students expressing fear for their safety.
Allegations of favoritism towards male students and faculty over female students and faculty , including an unfair attempt to impose a 45-day suspension on a female students, which male students did the same thing and it was swept under the rug.
Racially insensitive comments, including using derogatory terms like "ratchet" and "weave," making inappropriate assumptions about a Black student’s family, and offering a Black student fried chicken, all of which are disrespectful and discriminatory.
Discriminatory Actions Against Minority Groups:
Denial of a walkout for Latino students, further marginalizing a group of students who were simply exercising their right to voice their concerns.
Discriminatory treatment towards LGBTQ students and faculty, resulting in multiple resignations and terminations of staff who are either part of these communities or who support them.
An overall toxic, oppressive atmosphere that discourages diversity and inclusion.
Abuse of Power and Manipulation:
The administration’s behavior can be characterized as manipulative, abusive of power, and deeply divisive. There have been consistent reports of gaslighting, belittling, and creating a hostile environment for students and staff who do not align with her views or agenda.
A pattern of inconsistent policies and actions, such as preventing other students from participating in Metro Tech while allowing her own son to do so, undermines the credibility of leadership.
Negative Impact on Faculty and Staff:
Multiple faculty, staff members, and coaches have either been fired or left due to the toxic environment perpetuated by These individuals often share common traits: they are LGBTQ, people of color, or supporters of these communities. The school’s environment is suffering as a result.
Lack of Safe Spaces:
The school has increasingly become a space where students feel unsafe to express themselves, particularly marginalized groups such as people of color and LGBTQ students. The removal of the gender-neutral bathroom is just one example of how the school environment has shifted away from being a space of inclusivity and acceptance.
Our Demands: We, request the following actions to be taken:
An immediate transfer or removal of Mrs.Tope
An immediate investigation into the actions of Mrs.Tope including the inappropriate behavior towards students, discriminatory comments, and abuse of power.
The reinstatement of a gender-neutral bathroom to ensure the safety and inclusion of all students.
A review of school policies to ensure that students’ rights, safety, and dignity are respected, particularly those of LGBTQ students, students of color, and other marginalized groups.
A commitment to fostering an inclusive and respectful school environment free from discrimination, harassment, and intimidation.
A clear and transparent process to address the concerns of faculty and staff members who have faced unfair treatment, discrimination, or retaliation under Mrs.Tope
We stand together to ensure that our school is a place of respect, safety, and inclusivity for all students, staff, and faculty. We demand accountability and an end to the toxic and discriminatory practices that are harming our community.
We hope the administration will take swift and decisive action to address these issues and restore an environment where all individuals feel valued, heard, and safe.
