The St. Mary's River is the Longest River in Nova Scotia and our organization the St. Mary's River Association has been a volunteer environmental watch dog in the Valley for 41 years. We focus on river habitat restoration, Atlantic salmon and sea trout stock enhancement, education through our interpretive center, paddling adventures and strategic access and pool signage.
During the Fall of 2018 we found out that a potential giant open pit gold mine being developed by Atlantic Gold was proposed in the St. Mary's River Valley's most critical habitat! We have launched a campaign against this proposed gold mine and we call it NOPE (No Open Pit Excavation). So far, we have formed partners, created a web-page, organized protests, wrote elected officials, hosted educational meetings, created a social media presence, created videos and general advocacy all with a strong media presence. There is one simple message, "This is not an appropriate location for a giant gold mine!"
On July 24th we started a fund raising campaign in partnership with Small Change Fund. Our goal is to raise $5000.00 to help our NOPE campaign move in to the fall of 2020 and the new year of 2021. Small Change Fund will match what we raise up to $2500.00.
I am happy to say we are officially at $4550.00! We have almost reached our goal! If you can help every dollar counts.
Thank you all very much for your support during this campaign and throughout the last two years of this battle. We will make every one of these dollars count in our fight for clean water in the St. Mary’s River Valley!
