May 8th Federal Fisheries Minister Jonathan Wilkinson and our MP Sean Fraser joined a large group in Sherbrooke at the SMRA Interpretive Center and announced 1.2 Million Dollars from the Coastal Restoration Fund for our precious St Mary’s River Association. That DFO recognizes the precarious nature of our flora and fauna should be a wake-up call to officials with the authority to approve Atlantic Golds application for an open pit mine. Any unforeseen environmental issue could be catastrophic for not just the river, but for our region as a whole!
These new funds will be used for Habitat restoration and a new liming project. The money will be distributed over three years, and we here at SMRA are absolutely thrilled with the announcement. This money will add to the 1.1 million already raised and spent on the St. Mary’s River over the last 5 years.
