NON À LA VENTE DE LA MAISON DE KENNETH WHITE — OUI À SON PROJET DE MAISON D’ARTISTES
Le problème

Kenneth WHITE (né en 1936) « poète mondial d’origine écossaise [est] mort à Gwenved [sa maison à Trébeurden, Côtes-d’Armor] catastrophiquement heureux le 11 août 2023 » selon l’épitaphe qu’il avait rédigée.
Son œuvre avait été saluée par André Breton dès ses débuts et elle a obtenu une reconnaissance internationale notamment associée au concept de géopoétique.
Kenneth White et son épouse et traductrice Marie-Claude ont vécu plus de quarante ans dans cette maison de paysan-pêcheur. Une très grande partie de son œuvre a été écrite dans cet Atelier atlantique où il a rassemblé des objets du monde entier et constitué une bibliothèque remarquable qui sont comme une visualisation d’un nouveau monde à fonder.
Afin que cela soit préservé et puisse devenir « un lieu d’inspiration, un lieu de vie et de pensée » (KW), il en a fait don à sa commune, avec 100 000 euros, à la condition que Gwenved soit transformé en une « Maison Kenneth White d’artistes et d’écrivains » gérée par l’Institut international de géopoétique.
Le conseil municipal de Trébeurden a accepté ce legs le 23 février 2024. Par la suite, une erreur notariale a rendu la succession chaotique, mais au bout du compte, la maison a été léguée à la commune par son héritier légal, à l’erreur près que la condition expresse posée par Kenneth White n’a pas été mentionnée.
La commune de Trébeurden a donc bien hérité de l’argent (depuis 2024) prévu pour faire vivre la « Maison Kenneth White d’artistes et d’écrivains » et a accepté la donation de la maison des White le 30 janvier dernier. Mais à cause de ce défaut de condition, elle n’est pas juridiquement tenue d’en faire ce que les White souhaitaient.
Les premières déclarations de la maire de Trébeurden, au conseil municipal du 30 janvier 2026, sont inquiétantes : « La destination de la maison la plus vraisemblable sera une vente. […] Un inventaire complet sera réalisé. Les livres ne peuvent pas rester dans la maison », a-t-elle affirmé.
Les livres sont dans cette maison depuis des décennies et s’y sont très bien conservés. Séparer la maison de son contenu serait absurde (et dispendieux), tout l’esprit s’en évanouirait. Déplacer les livres ailleurs romprait le lien étroit aux lieux, à l’image d’une société qui veut nous vendre du faux-semblant à bon compte, sans parler des nombreux objets disposés avec soin dans l'espace. Toutes celles et ceux (et ils furent nombreux à rendre visite à l’écrivain) qui sont entrés dans son atelier-bibliothèque ont été saisis par l’atmosphère rare de ce lieu de haute culture, paisible et vivifiant à la fois.
Vendre Gwenved priverait Trébeurden d’un lieu de l’esprit qui est connu et admiré dans de nombreux pays.
Vendre Gwenved serait surtout rompre l’engagement moral et mémoriel conclu par la commune du vivant de Kenneth White. Ce n’est pas concevable.
Kenneth White a accordé sa confiance et son argent à la commune pour que le projet de « Maison d’artistes et d’écrivains » voie le jour.
Pour que ces volontés posthumes du grand écrivain scoto-français Kenneth White soient respectées, pour que Trébeurden reste sur la carte du monde ce foyer de l’esprit que les White en ont fait,
Nous vous demandons de bien vouloir signer et faire signer cette pétition demandant la création de la « Maison Kenneth White d’artistes et d’écrivains » selon les dispositions prévues par le défunt poète.

Kenneth WHITE (born in 1936) "world poet of Scottish origin [has] died in Gwenved [his home in Trébeurden, Côtes-d'Armor, France] catastrophically happy on 11 August, 2023" according to the epitaph he had written.
His work had been praised by André Breton from its beginnings, and it received international recognition, particularly his concept of geopoetics.
Kenneth White and his wife and translator Marie-Claude lived in this farmer-fisherman's house for more than forty years. A very large part of his work was written in this Atlantic Workshop where he collected objects from all over the world and built up a remarkable library that are like a visualization of a new world to be founded.
For this to be preserved and to become "a place of inspiration, a place of life and thought" (KW), he donated it to his municipality, together with €100,000, on the condition that Gwenved be transformed into a "Kenneth White Residence for Artists and Writers" managed by the International Institute of Geopoetics.
The townhall council of Trébeurden accepted this bequest on 23 February 2024. Subsequently, a notarial error made the succession chaotic, but in the end, the house was bequeathed to the municipality by his legal heir, except that the express condition set by Kenneth White was not mentioned.
The townhall of Trébeurden has therefore inherited the money (since 2024) planned to keep the "Kenneth White Residence for Artists and Writers" alive and accepted the donation of the White house last 30 January. But because of this lack of condition, the municipality is not legally bound to do what the Whites wanted.
The first statements of the mayor of Trébeurden, at the municipality council meeting of 30 January, 2026, are worrying: "The most likely future of the house will be a sale. […] A complete inventory will be carried out. Books can't stay in the house," she said.
The books have been in this house for decades and have been preserved very well there. Separating the house from its contents would be absurd (and expensive), the whole spirit would vanish. Moving books elsewhere would break the close link to the place, like a society that wants to sell us pretence for cheap, not to mention the many objects carefully arranged in the place. All those (and many of them visited the writer) who entered his studio-library were struck by the rare atmosphere of this place of high culture, peaceful and invigorating at the same time.
Selling Gwenved would deprive Trébeurden of a place of the spirit that is known and admired in many countries.
Selling Gwenved would above all be breaking the moral and memorial commitment made by the municipality during Kenneth White's lifetime. It's not conceivable.
Kenneth White has given his trust and money to the municipality so that the "Residence for Artists and Writers" project can be carried out.
In order that these posthumous wishes of the great Scottish French writer Kenneth White may be respected, so that Trébeurden may remain on the map of the world this home of the spirit that the Whites have made of it,
We are asking you to sign and have others sign this petition asking for the creation of the "Kenneth White Residence for Artists and Writers" according to the provisions laid down by the late poet.
