Nominate the Secombe Theatre as an asset of community value

The Issue

The Secombe Theatre, located in Sutton, holds an irreplaceable place in the heart of our borough. Despite being closed to performances, the theatre is still a beacon of hope and community service. It has shown, especially in recent times, that its versatility and relevance to our borough extend far beyond the arts.

In 2019, the building took on a new role as a sanctuary for our most vulnerable residents during challenging times. The charity Sutton Night Watch utilized the space, turning the Secombe into a lifeline for those in need. This vital usage showcased the theatre as more than just a performance venue. The Secombe is an adaptable and essential facility that fosters the social wellbeing of our community and serves diverse needs beyond its original purpose.

Current redevelopment timelines suggest major works may not begin for several years. Therefore, it is entirely realistic to bring the building back into community use within the 5-year window required by the Localism Act This petition supports a formal nomination under the Localism Act 2011."

Recognizing the multifaceted value of the Secombe Theatre, I urge you to help in nominating it as an Asset of Community Value (ACV). Designating it as an ACV ensures that this invaluable space is preserved for future generations, remaining a hub for community activity, creativity, and compassion.

"The Secombe Theatre is the only large-scale indoor space in the town centre capable of hosting diverse groups. Its loss would significantly harm the social wellbeing and social interests of Sutton residents."

The importance of the Secombe Theatre goes beyond cultural enrichment; it plays a critical role in fostering social connections and offering support systems for those who need it most. By safeguarding the future of the Secombe Theatre, we are investing in the social health and prosperity of our community at large.

Join me in this crucial campaign to protect a vital cornerstone of our community. Help ensure that the Secombe Theatre receives the recognition and protection it deserves for its contributions to our borough. Please sign this petition to nominate the Secombe Theatre as an Asset of Community Value and help keep its legacy alive for generations to come. Your support can make a difference in preserving this cherished local landmark

While the site is earmarked for housing, the long-term timeline means it is realistic for the building to serve the community again within the next 5 years before any demolition occurs.
