The issue

Ten years ago, the local council made the decision to cut down an acre of Pine forest at Pizzey Park, and five years later, more changes came with the construction of additional tennis courts. Among these, one court, positioned closest to our residential buildings, was transformed into a pickleball court. This transition happened without any consultation with the local residents, including myself, who now suffer daily from the noise it generates.

The constant picking and popping sounds of pickleball begin as early as 7am and can persist until 9pm or sometimes even later into the night. Environmental assessments have recorded sound levels between 48 and 67 decibels, contributing significantly to noise pollution in our community. This high-pitched frequency noise has not only disrupted the peace in our homes but also changed the park's ecosystem. The wildlife that once thrived here has diminished, and the tranquil atmosphere that Pizzey Park was known for is no more.

Moreover, the councils' removal of trees along the school fence line last year stripped away the natural noise abatement these trees provided. I find myself standing alone, publicly vilified in parliament for voicing these concerns, even though there are other families along the fence line who are equally affected but have remained silent, perhaps due to a lack of awareness or fear of retribution.

The Gold Coast City Council needs to take immediate action either by relocating the pickleball activities to a more suitable area or implementing effective noise mitigation measures to protect the well-being of its residents. Possible solutions could include erecting sound barriers, restricting playing hours to more community-friendly times, or investing in quieter equipment. The council must address these issues and meet its responsibility to maintain Pizzey Park as a safe haven for both people and wildlife.

Your support can push for meaningful change and restoration of peace in our community. Please sign this petition to urge the Gold Coast City Council to prioritize the health and serenity of its residents and the wildlife in Pizzey Park.
