Dr. Abiy Ahmed should be nominated for Nobel peace prize
The Issue
Ethiopia is undergoing remarkable political transformation never seen in the country's recent history. Since coming to power just over two months ago, the new Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed, has taken a series of radical steps that are transforming the political map and restoring trust in public authority. Perhaps the most popular Ethiopian leader to date, the Prime Minister's performance over the last two months has been stellar. Since his inauguration, the Prime Minister has toured the country, listening to the people's grievances. He has reassured the public that his government is ready to take concrete steps towards democratic opening and national reconciliation. His government has released thousands of political prisoners, met with the political opposition and civil society to discuss reform, invited previously exiled political parties to return to their country, and embarked on major institutional reforms, including the security and the justice sectors.
He inherited a country that has seen some of the fastest economic growth in the world in recent years, but has also been riven by years of protests by people who feel marginalised. The previous government was accused by many of human rights violations - including torture and extrajudicial killing of political dissidents. But in a few short months, Dr. Abiy has ended the border war with Eritrea by agreeing to give up disputed territory, in the process normalising relations with the long-time foe. He has also lifted the state of emergency, ordered the release of thousands of prisoners, condemned brutal treatment of prisoners, calling it "terrorism" and unblocked hundreds of websites and TV channels. But he has also come under attack, with two people killed in an explosion in June at a rally held to show support for him. In an age of world politics when the loudest voices are so often discordant and divisive, the quietly spoken Ethiopian leader represents a striking contrast. He has taken risks for change and peace that will surely bring him to the attention of the Nobel Prize committee. It is of course early days but not too early to acknowledge the arrival of an extraordinary politician on the world scene. I strongly urge the Nobel Peace Prize Nomination Committee consider the East African conflict resolver and peace maker, His Excellency Dr. Abiy Ahmed. The rest of Africa and the world should learn that LOVE wins.
