A different website is asking people to sign a petition so the Pennsylvania Game Commission will allow an industrial wind project to be built on State Game Lands 300 in Lackawanna County.

We need to show the Pennsylvania Game Commission, the wind company, our legislators, and others, that hunters and Pennsylvania residents are opposed to commercial development on state game lands.

Pennsylvania’s State Game Lands provide habitat protection to many species of plants and animals, many of which are rare or threatened.  In addition to protecting natural habitats, our state game lands provide various opportunities ranging from hunting to hiking.  According to the Pennsylvania Game Commission, species popular for hunting in State Game Lands 300 are, “white-tailed deer, eastern wild turkey, black bear, coyote, ruffed grouse and squirrels.  Snowshoe hares are also present on SGL 300."

State Game Lands 300, located in Lackawanna and Wayne Counties, provides protection for a globally rare ridgetop ecosystem that is known in only a few places in Pennsylvania.  This rare habitat in SGL 300 is called the Moosic Mountain Barrens.  Just south of SGL 300 is The Nature Conservancy’s Dick & Nancy Eales Preserve.  The Nature Conservancy (TNC) received a $1.1 million grant from Pennsylvania in 2001 to protect this area from commercial development.  While the wind turbines would not be built on TNC’s property, it could impact their fire management program.

Moosic Mountain is not barren, but that is the term used to describe this habitat because the vegetation is mostly shrubs, small trees, and open areas of grasses and flowering plants.  The natural succession to a forest with taller trees is inhibited by poor soil and by a history of fires. Prescribed fire is used today to maintain the habitat.  Please help us protect Moosic Mountain from commercial development.
