No to the removal of parking from the east end of North Berwick High Street

No to the removal of parking from the east end of North Berwick High Street

The Issue

At the end of April, East Lothian Council Councillors unanimously voted in favour of removing all parking from the east end of the High Street, from Quality Street to North Berwick Pharmacy. The Council proposes to leave only three bays for loading and blue badge holder drop off.

While most of us will agree that improvements for pedestrians are sorely needed in that area, including levelling the very uneven pavement, this decision was based on an impact assessment that considered interest groups ranging from refugees to Gaelic speakers, but astonishingly, gave no consideration to local shoppers nor, local business.

We, the undersigned, request that a proper assessment is carried out by independent consultants about its likely impact on local business, and therefore on the viability of our precious High Street before the final decision is made to go ahead with these proposals.

Note: this petition relates to proposals under item 05 via the link below set out by East Lothian Council. A seperate petition is available in opposition to the Parking Management Proposals including the introduction of parking charges, see item 06.
