No to proposed Welcome Bay Rd lights & HOV lane
The issue
IMPORTANT : Please update your location details in your settings before signing, if you live in Welcome Bay change your city to “Welcome Bay, Tauranga”.
Background
In late 2025 TCC held two public meetings in Welcome Bay, regarding a proposed Arterial Route Upgrade between Meadowview Drive & Hammond St. At both meetings, residents voiced strong opposition to the proposed upgrades, for many different reasons. One major safety concern raised was regarding the proposed removal of the flush median, which would mean vehicles turning into driveways across Welcome Bay Rd would have to stop in a live traffic lane. Emergency Services staff have also expressed concern, as they regularly use the flush median to bypass traffic. More info regarding the proposed changes can be found here https://letstalk.tauranga.govt.nz/projects/keep-tauranga-moving .
In spite of the opposition amongst the community, on March 31 this year TCC staff recommended proceeding with the proposed works, and elected members voted to do so, on the condition that further consultation with the community would occur, before any work commenced.
Two further community meetings have occurred since then, both of which were supposed to be to discuss the annual plan. At both of these meetings, residents again expressed strong opposition to the proposed works, and were told that further community consultation will occur in August, to determine the final design. For many reasons, these community meetings are generally poorly attended, and the intention of this petition is to provide a voice for community members who are unable to attend.
The Petition
We the undersigned wish to tell Tauranga City Council that:
1) We DO NOT want traffic lights at the intersection of Welcome Bay Road & Kaitemako Road.
2) We DO NOT want a High Occupancy Vehicle lane on Welcome Bay Road.
