No to Mining in San Fernando, Sibuyan Island-Protect Our Forests, Waters, and Communities

The Issue

We, the undersigned citizens, residents, and environmental advocates, strongly oppose mining operations in San Fernando, Sibuyan Island, Romblon.

Sibuyan Island is known as the "Galapagos of Asia" because of its unique biodiversity. The mountains and forests of San Fernando are the source of clean water for thousands of families. They protect us from floods, landslides, and drought. They are home to rare plants, animals, and indigenous communities who have lived in harmony with nature for generations.

We say NO to mining because:

1. Water Security: Mining threatens our rivers and watersheds. Once poisoned, we lose our main source of drinking water and irrigation.

2. Environment: Sibuyan has one of the most pristine and biodiverse forests in the Philippines. Mining means deforestation, habitat loss, and extinction of species found nowhere else on Earth.

3. Disaster Risk: Removing mountains and forests increases the risk of floods, landslides, and soil erosion - putting lives and homes in danger.

4. Livelihood: Fishing, farming, and eco-tourism sustain our communities. Mining jobs are short-term, but the damage to land and sea lasts for generations.

5. Future Generations: We have a right to clean air, clean water, and a healthy island. We cannot trade that for profit.

The people of San Fernando and Sibuyan did not consent to the destruction of our island. We choose life, water, and sustainable development over extractive mining.

THEREFORE, WE URGE:

1. The immediate cancellation of all mining permits and applications in San Fernando, Sibuyan Island.

2. The  declaration of Sibuyan Island as a protected area to safeguard its biodiversity and watershed.

3. Genuine consultation with local communities and respect for the right to say NO.

We call on the DENR and our local leaders to listen to the people and prioritize people and nature over profit.
