Art Duran started this petition to Mayor of San Jose Sam Liccardo and

The Santa Clara Housing Authority, Mayor Sam Liccardo and the San Jose City Council continue to find locations in district 2 to disproportionately push forward new housing projects for the homeless and low income people. Now there is a Homekey proposal to purchase and convert the 150 unit Residence Inn Marriott on San Ignacio Avenue into low income housing. We will have three homeless and low income housing projects within one mile on Bernal Road in District 2 (Residence Inn plus two operational tiny home sites). This concentration is troublesome because it is happening right in the middle of family oriented residential areas : Monterey Grove, Los Paseos, Avenida Espana, Metcalf, California Maison, Rancho Santa Teresa, Basking Ridge, Silver Leaf and other nearby communities.

That all of these housing projects are being concentrated in the center of a hard working, middle class community in D2 comes as no surprise as this area has been labeled by the San Jose leadership as the "path of least resistance" in the city. This label is very insulting to all the residents.

As San Jose keeps pushing and concentrating housing for homeless and low income people on Bernal Road,  it will have a negative impact in the local quality of life, property values and overall safety of the community. As a result, this area will become less and less desirable to live in. This concentration of housing is not happening anywhere else in the city of San Jose. Most districts (7 out of 10) do not even have a single tiny homes site yet nor a Homekey housing project. We will have three homeless and low income housing sites and all within one mile.

The Santa Clara Housing Authority, Mayor Sam Liccardo and the San Jose City Council are clearly "carving out" a large part of district 2 in South San Jose (Bernal Road) to create a whole new web of housing developments dedicated to homeless and low income people most of which are being sent here from other parts of the city.

As many local residents know, there is inertia in the San Jose City Council to solve the homelessness problems of the city by finding locations in our district as shown by the plan to send over 100 RVs to Santa Teresa VTA Park & Ride from the airport encampment in downtown. When the next housing project comes for consideration at the San Jose City Council, it will become an easier decision to just push it into this community by inertia and this area will consolidate itself as a homeless and low income corridor in San Jose (rumor is the city is also looking to purchase the Wyndham Garden for homeless and low income housing).

We cannot continue to be quiet and allow an unfair concentration of homeless and low income housing projects to bring our community any further down to the point where local residents start uprooting and moving out. Mayor Sam Liccardo and the San Jose City Council need to stop the inertia and start finding locations for housing projects in other parts of the city. They should stop any additional homeless and low income housing projects in district 2 until there is equity among all districts in San Jose. In district 2 we already have our fair share. Lets oppose this Homekey proposal and show the city of San Jose that we are not the "path of least resistance" that they think we are.
