No shutoffs this Summer! We need lower utility bills!

No shutoffs this Summer! We need lower utility bills!

The Issue

All of us should be able to afford to keep the lights on in our homes, but high utility bills are pricing us out of a service we all need to survive. Even with careful budgeting, it's becoming harder to afford to pay utility bills that just keep on rising. And why should we? The electric utility industry profited more than $54 billion in 2024, while shutting off electricity to Floridians over 2.5 million times that year.

Utilities can afford to lower our bills, and our public officials should make them. We can't keep paying $200, $300, $400+ a month for utilities, especially when we can't switch to another provider because of the monopoly utility market.

Electricity and water are not luxuries; they are necessities to live in a state like Florida, where utilities can disconnect service whenever, even during extreme heat -- which causes more deaths each year than floods, hurricanes, or tornadoes combined. When I was disconnected, I had no hot water or no power. I spent seven days showering at a local gym and sleeping in the cold, before I found the money to get my lights turned back. No one should ever have to experience that, but yet, too many of us do.

If you believe that:

  • all of us deserve access to utility service without fear of disconnection
  • our utility bill should be less than what it takes to fill up your gas tank
  • community voices should dictate policy, not corporations

Then join us in calling on the Governor, Florida State Legislature, and Florida Public Service Commission to bring an end to high utility bills and utility disconnections in Florida. With your help, we can demand that utilities lower our bills and end their disconnection practice so that every Floridian can afford to keep their lights on and the A/C running this Summer.

Sign this petition to support an end to disconnections in Florida and to lower utility bills. For those of us living paycheck to paycheck, every dollar counts, and high utility bills take away from what we can afford to spend on other basic necessities. Please sign and share!
