NO ON HO237 - High School Sports are for STUDENT ATHLETES
The Issue
STOP THE STATE TAKEOVER OF IDAHO HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS – ENFORCE THE RULES, DON’T ABANDON THEM!
Idaho high school sports are at a crossroads, and we need your help. A proposal is being pushed forward that would allow unrestricted athlete transfers—meaning students could move to any school at any time. If this happens, high school sports in Idaho will never be the same.
We do not want the Idaho State Legislature to take over the Idaho High School Activities Association (IHSAA) and turn our high school sports into a free-for-all. We believe in the current rules, but they need to be enforced fairly and consistently—not ignored or selectively applied.
Why This is a Bad Idea for Our Kids & Communities:
It will create a few "all-star" schools while gutting the rest. Talent will stack up in a handful of programs, leaving other schools with fewer opportunities for student-athletes to compete at a high level.
It’s unfair to the communities that fund their local schools. Taxpayers invest in their school districts, their facilities, and their programs. Should a school funded by one district become a magnet for transfers while others struggle to fill rosters?
It destroys the integrity of high school sports. If kids can transfer anytime, teams will lose their sense of unity, commitment, and development. This isn’t club sports—this is supposed to be about playing for your school and community.
It teaches the wrong lesson to our kids. Instead of working through challenges, athletes will learn that if things don’t go their way, they can just jump ship. That’s not what high school sports are about.
It undermines fairness in competition. Schools with more resources will attract the best athletes, leaving smaller schools and programs without the ability to compete. We’ve seen this happen in other states, and it devastates local sports programs.
What We Are Asking For:
We don’t need the state legislature to step in and take over the IHSAA. We don’t need an extreme rule change that opens the floodgates for endless transfers. What we need is for the IHSAA to enforce its existing rules fairly and consistently.
Right now, families and athletes are frustrated because the IHSAA has been inconsistent in how it applies its rules. Some students are denied eligibility even when they follow the rules, while others seem to get special treatment. We understand why this has led to frustration—but blowing up the entire system is NOT the solution.
The IHSAA needs to step up, stop playing favorites, and enforce the rules they already have in place. If we fix the enforcement problem, we don’t need a complete overhaul that will permanently damage Idaho high school sports.
Sign this petition to tell the IHSAA and Idaho legislators:
✔️ We DO NOT support a state takeover of the IHSAA.
✔️ We DO NOT support unrestricted athlete transfers.
✔️ We DO support fair, consistent enforcement of existing rules.
✔️ We DO want to protect the integrity of high school sports.
Our kids deserve better. Our communities deserve better. Let’s fix the problem—without destroying the future of Idaho high school sports.
